
Gumrah: Luxury Car Busted with 1,490 Bundles of Foreign Cigarettes; One Arrested
Cachar Police seized 1,490 bundles of foreign cigarettes worth an estimated Rs 30 lakh during an anti-smuggling operation on Friday (July 10). A luxury car used for the alleged smuggling was also seized, while one person was arrested on suspicion of being involved in the racket.
Acting on specific intelligence, police from Gumrah carried out an operation at Kashibon-Creek Park Road in Digarkhal on Friday afternoon. According to police, they had received information that a group was transporting a large quantity of foreign cigarettes through the route for illegal trafficking to another state.
During the operation, police intercepted and searched a luxury vehicle. The search led to the recovery of 1,490 bundles of foreign cigarettes. Officials said the consignment was allegedly being transported for smuggling outside the state. The seized cigarettes are estimated to have a market value of around Rs 30 lakh.
Police arrested a suspect identified as Minal Hussain, a resident of the Dholai area, in connection with the case. He is currently being questioned as part of the investigation. The vehicle used in the alleged smuggling operation has also been seized.
Police said National Highway 6 has frequently been used by smugglers to transport drugs and other illegal goods. As a result, Gumrah Police regularly monitor the route and have made several seizures in the past.
The investigation is continuing to identify others who may have been involved in the smuggling network. Police are also trying to determine the origin of the seized cigarettes and the intended destination of the consignment.
