Dr. Ravi Kannan receives Padma Shri Award from President of India at Raisina Hills

Marking the glorious moment for Barak Valley and entire Assam, Dr. Ravi Kannan, renowned Oncologist surgeon of Cachar Cancer Hospital, have received the memento of Padma Shri award, which was conferred to Dr. Kannan on January 26th, 2020. President of India Ramnath Kovind presented the memento to Dr. Ravi Kannan today at Rashtrapati Bhawan. Dr. Ravi Kannan got Padma Shri in the category of medicine. The official Twitter handle of the President of India tweeted that, “Dr. Kannan and his team offer cancer care to impoverished communities of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Manipur and Tripura”

The ceremony to honour Padma awardees (of 2020) was held today at the Raisina Hills. The awards have been presented by President Ram Nath Kovind. Total 119 Padma Awards have been presented by President this year, the list comprises 7 Padma Vibhushan, 10 Padma Bhushan and 102 Padma Shri Awards. 29 of the awardees are women, 16 Posthumous awardees and 1 transgender awardee.

Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian state honour conferred by Government of India in recognition of their distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity including art, education, industry, literature, science, sports, medicine, social service and public affairs.

Along with Dr. Ravi Kannan, other Padma Shri recipients from Assam are Dr. Kushal Konwar Sarma (Medicine), Jugendra Nath Phukan (Literature and Education), Lil Bahadur Chettri (Literature and Education), Indira PP Bora (Assam).

Southern Assam, Barak Valley and the entire region is among the most backyard areas in the country in terms of medical and healthcare facilities. Dr. Kannan, who served as surgeon in Adyar Cancer institute, Chennai, moved here in 2007 to serve as a cancer surgeon. Dr. Kannan and Cachar Cancer Hospital has treated over 70,000 cancer patients since its inception. The Hospital is now treating more than 20,000 patients every year, it also generates employment for their attendants, and provides free food to the patients with low-cost lodging for their family members.

Expressing his gratitude at conferred with Padma Award, Dr. Kannan gave the credit to his team and coworkers of the Hospital. “The hospital is not about only one man or institution. So many people have contributed to it and the award is rightly to the spirit of the community of this valley. It was only possible together. The achievement is not only mine but all my colleagues in the hospital from top to bottom andalso the society who supported us,” Dr. Kannan told Barak Bulletin.
