“Kamalakhya’s Dadagiri, Dalali Murdabad!” Tension breaks in Cachar Congress’s meeting, APCC GS manhandled

Forget about winning elections and forming a government, the Cachar Congress in its current form, cannot even conduct a Town Committee meeting with dignity. Silchar’s Congress Bhawan remains a witness to yet another abysmal act by the party members.

Today, as per schedule, the Cachar Congress’s Town Committee meeting was held at the party’s office in Silchar. The meeting was chaired by Apurba Bhattacharjee, general secretary of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). Former minister Ajit Singh, senior Congress leader Babul Hore, party’s candidate from Silchar, Tamal Kanti Banik among others were present in the meeting.

As the meeting progressed, Apurba Bhattacharjee was questioned over the role that Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, working president of APCC and MLA from North Karimganj, is playing in Cachar Congress. In no time, the Youth Congress members got irked. “Kamalakhya’s Dadagiri, Dalali, Murdabad” slogans were raised in the meeting.

While it seemed like a lack of consensus among the party members and a regular disagreement, it wasn’t. Soon the hall got divided into two halves, Pro-Kamalakhya and anti-Kamalakhya. The Congress members brought in bamboo sticks to attack each other. Abuses were hurled at each other and sloganeering against Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha continued. In fact, the chair for the day, Apurba Bhattacharjee was also manhandled. Inside the Congress Bhawan complex, his effigy was burnt by his own colleagues in the party.

Anti-Kamalakhya brigade alleged that Dey Purkayastha is selling the essence of Cachar Congress to BJP. “He is an agent and he is helping other agents of BJP to rise up the ladder in Cachar Congress. This is nothing but a plan to destroy Cachar Congress by making the agents sit at key positions and work against the interest of the party,” said an angry Congress member while burning the effigy of Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha.

If sources are to be believed then Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha backed Tamal Banik to be the president of Cachar District Congress which has not gone well with a section of the Congress members.

As it was turning out to be a law and order situation, Additional SP of Cachar Police rushed to the Congress Bhawan with force to bring the situation under control.
