BJP Secures Two SMC Wards Unopposed After Candidate Withdrawals

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured two seats in the Silchar Municipal Corporation election without a contest after opposition candidates withdrew their nominations from Wards 9 and 20.

BJP candidates Bijendra Prasad Singh from Ward 9 and Bhakti Sen Talukdar from Ward 20 have been elected unopposed following the withdrawal of their rival candidates.

In Ward 9, Congress candidate Amalendu De and SUCI candidate Apon Lal Das withdrew their nominations, leaving BJP’s Bijendra Prasad Singh as the only candidate in the fray.

In Ward 20, Congress candidate Rupali Das also withdrew her nomination, paving the way for BJP candidate Bhakti Sen Talukdar to win the seat unopposed.

The developments came after three Congress candidates withdrew their nominations from different wards. Apart from Amalendu De in Ward 9 and Rupali Das in Ward 20, Congress candidate Mousumi Das withdrew her nomination from Ward 12.

Following the withdrawals, the BJP has secured two seats without polling in the respective wards. The remaining wards will continue to see electoral contests among candidates whose nominations have remained in the fray after the withdrawal process.

Assam Minister Kaushik Rai congratulated Bijendra Prasad Singh and Bhakti Sen Talukdar in a social media post, stating that the two BJP candidates had won unopposed. He also wished them success in their new journey of public service.

The withdrawal of nominations has added a significant development to the electoral contest for the Silchar Municipal Corporation, with the final field of candidates now taking shape ahead of polling.
