All ferry services on river Barak in Cachar and Karimganj shut: Water Transport; DC Cachar issues advisory
The alarming rise in the water level of Barak river has forced the Inland Water Transport Department to take precautionary measures. River Barak at Annapurna Ghat is flowing over 20m against the danger level of 19.83m.
The Inland Water Transport Department has issued an order declaring complete closure of Ferry services in the districts of Cachar and Karimganj.
“It is for the general information to all concerned that the river water level has already crossed the danger level as measured in Annapurna Ghat. As such, as a precautionary measure and in view of the overall safety of life and property, all ferry services on river Barak, with the districts of Cachar and Karimganj under the Inland Water Transport Division Silchar are suspected with immediate effect until further order,” states the order.
Meanwhile, DC Cachar has also issued an advisory. It states, “In lieu of river Barak having crossed the danger level on 18th June 2022 & in anticipation of heavy rainfall for the next 3 (three) days in Cachar District as per reports received from Regional Meteorological Center, Guwahati, Public is hereby requested to avoid moving out of their residences other than for emergency requirements or medical purposes.”
DC Keerthi Jalli urged people residing in and around vulnerable locations (i.e. close to river banks, landslide prone areas) to shift to the nearest relief camps or to the nearest School / Community Buildings for immediate shelter.
