Demonstration with dead body in Hospital road after man dies due to electrocution; Magistrate assures immediate action
Gross negligence and failure to deliver the duty of the public representatives of Cachar have caused the life of a Silchar youth. The Public has responded to this strongly and has blocked the main road at Ambicapatty point creating serious traffic congestion and keeping the dead body on the main road for long hours. This response came after the elected representatives were silent even after today’s incident. More than a hundred people took to the streets wearing black ribbons as a sign of protest with placards and slogans against the administration. The youth, Joydeep Chakraborty was a resident of Bilpar’s Purno Paul Road and died due to electrocution early morning at around 7.
According to the available reports from the locals, his residential home was flooded with rainwater which came from a blocked drain supposed to flush out the rainwater. A live wire somehow fell in the water and as soon as he stepped from his bed, he died due to a high voltage electric shock. His death shocked the entire neighbourhood and enraged them with the gross negligence of the municipality. They decided to protest his death and blocked the main road which continued for over two hours.
Joydeep Chakraborty’s brother, talking to the media said, “This is gross negligence of the administration, we have been submitting memorandums since 2005, to clean and widen the drains of this area as, one night’s rain floods our homes. But the administration has never paid heed to our issue. I want to ask this question to the administration and the DC, who will take responsibility for my brother’s death. We won’t withdraw this strike until the DC and the executive officer of the Municipality come here. I ask them, how will they compensate for his death?” He further said, “He has married just 5 months ago and his wife is pregnant, who will take responsibility for her? I want answers from the DC and the elected MLA”.
Another protesting local said, “Just 15 days back, we wrote letters to the MP, the MLA and the DC to clean the road of Bilpar. This drain is filled with waste and whenever it rains, the houses in the locality get flooded. It was knee-level water at Munna’s home and just after he stepped out of his bed, he died of electrocution. The elected representatives are not at all responsible. After the election is over, they forget that they won because of our votes. They are just good at making tall promises and after the election is over, they forget our existence. The Commissioner we elected has only filled her locker of public money. Where is Gopika Deb today?” It is worth mentioning here that, the current MP of Cachar, Dr Rajdeep Roy is a resident of Lochan Bairagi Road, which is also in Bilpar.
The blockade was lifted at 6:30 PM after Magistrate Kumar Gaurav spoke with the protesting public on behalf of the administration. He assured that a sum of Rs. 4 lakh will be sanctioned as compensation and at the same time, promised to handle the drainage issue of the Purno Paul lane in Bilpar.
