Bhupen Hazarika Statue Planned at Barak Museum in Historic First for Valley

In a significant cultural initiative for Barak Valley, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the All Cachar District Students’ Union (ACDSU) have proposed the installation of a life-size statue of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika at the Barak Museum and Library premises in Bantarapur.

According to a permission letter issued by the Barak Museum and Library, the institution has officially granted permission for the installation of the statue and extended its support for the successful implementation of the project.

The museum authority stated that the proposal was viewed as a meaningful initiative in recognition of Dr Hazarika’s immense contribution to the cultural, literary and social heritage of Assam and the North-East. The letter noted that the project would help preserve and promote regional cultural identity.

Speaking to Barak Bulletin, Rakesh Singha, President of the All Cachar District Students’ Union (AASU), said the initiative is a collaborative effort between the district and state units of the All Assam Students’ Union. He said the project aims to honour the legacy and contributions of Dr Bhupen Hazarika to the cultural and social fabric of Assam. Singha further stated that the Barak Museum and Library authorities have extended their support to the initiative by providing space within the museum premises for the installation of the proposed life-size statue.

In the communication addressed to the office-bearers of ACDSU, the museum authority expressed appreciation for the initiative and conveyed its best wishes for the successful completion of the project.

Dr Bhupen Hazarika, a Bharat Ratna awardee, is widely regarded as one of the most influential cultural figures from Assam. His contributions to music, literature, cinema and social causes continue to inspire people across the region and the country.

The proposed statue is expected to be installed within the premises of the Barak Museum and Library at Bantarapur. However, details regarding the timeline for construction and installation have not yet been announced.
