Cachar Chess Association is organising Barak Valley based Open Inter School Chess Championship on February 18 and 19. This two-day event will be held at Delhi Public School located at Silchar Kathal Road.

Cachar Chess Association Secretary Nirmalya Chakraborty said that this is the fourth edition of the tournament. Its previous three editions also received great response and the events were successful. However, it could not be organised for the last two years due to the covid pandemic. Good response is coming from schools for the upcoming championship. A campaign is being conducted in various schools of Cachar ahead of the tournament.

Notably, no rated player can participate in this Open Championship based in Barak Valley. The Secretary of Cachar also Chess Association explained why such a decision was taken. He said, “We have taken such a decision to bring in new players. In fact, there is a big difference between rated chess players and new players. As a result, new players could achieve nothing while playing with rated chessmen. Also no new players have emerged since covid. So to bring new players, we are only taking unrated players this time.”

The championship will be played in three categories – Pawn Group, Knight Group and Queen Group. Students from nursery to class two will play in Pawn group. The Knight group will consist of class three to class five students and Queen group will have sixth to ninth class students. There will be a total of 33 prizes in the tournament. Six rounds will be played in the tournament in Swiss league format.
