Clash erupts between ABVP and NSUI members at GC College during membership drive, Several students injured
A violent brawl ensued between members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) inside the premises of GC College today, leaving several students injured. The incident unfolded as both the students’ organisations were conducting simultaneous membership drives within the college campus, which became the apple of discord between them that ultimately escalated into a physical confrontation. According to reports, the college authorities promptly alerted the local police and requested their intervention to restore order and calm among the agitated students.
NSUI Cachar district President, Jonmejoy Choudhury, spoke to reporters, alleging that organisation had been conducting a membership drive in a democratic manner within the campus since yesterday. However, he claimed that the ABVP intentionally initiated a membership drive in the same location today trying to provoke NSUI members with verbal abuses and subsequently assaulted them. Choudhury further accused the Vice Principal of showing indifference to the injured NSUI students who were rushed to his room and allegedly told by him to vacate the place forcing them to remain outdoors in the scorching heat, including one unconscious student.
Choudhury warned of a potential mass agitation within the college campus unless the three miscreants, identified by NSUI members, who carried out the alleged assault, were rusticated by the college authorities as promised by the Principal.
In response to these allegations, Rohit Chanda, GC College Students’ Union President and ABVP Silchar Mahanagar Executive Member, refuted the claims and counter-accused NSUI of orchestrating attacks on students at both the GC College and Karimganj College today. Chanda asserted that the ABVP had been conducting its membership drive for several days prior to NSUI’s initiation. ABVP is of the opinion that such attacks are part of a larger conspiracy to destabilise Silchar and Karimganj, for attempting to gain an upper hand in the elections by intimidating students to join NSUI using hooligans due to shortage of members within the organisation.
Chanda also alleged that four ABVP students had fallen victim to the campus violence today and subsequently transported to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The organisation intends to file FIRs to initiate Police investigations into the incident. Additionally, Chanda also accused that female ABVP members were subjected to harassment, and caste-based derogatory remarks were reportedly hurled at ABVP members during the altercation.
