From Protest to Health Crisis: NIT Silchar Workers Fall Ill During Indefinite Hunger Strike

Several members of the NIT Workers Union have fallen ill while continuing an indefinite hunger strike at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar campus, where they have been protesting since August 27 demanding permanent employment.

The health of some of the protesting workers reportedly deteriorated during the fast, prompting a team of doctors and medical staff to visit the protest site following instructions from the district administration.

The medical team examined the fasting workers and began providing medical assistance. However, the protesting workers alleged that NIT authorities obstructed attempts to provide intravenous fluids, or saline, to some of those who had fallen ill.

The allegation led to tension at the protest site. The workers claimed that prolonged fasting had affected the health of several participants and expressed concern over the alleged obstruction of medical treatment.

According to information available, some of the workers whose condition was considered serious were later shifted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.

The allegations regarding obstruction of medical treatment and IV fluids have been made by the protesting workers. NIT Silchar’s response to the allegations was not available at the time of publication.

The Workers Union has been demanding the regularisation of its members’ employment and has been continuing its protest at the NIT campus. The administration is monitoring the situation as the health condition of the fasting workers remains a concern.

Further developments are expected regarding the workers’ health, the allegations against the institute authorities and the administration’s response to the ongoing protest.
