Assam prepares for a momentous celebration of literary brilliance as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gears up to honor 23 distinguished litterateurs from the region with Literary Award and Pension. Among these luminaries, two revered authors from Cachar District, Jaya Deb and Champa Lal Sinha, are set to receive accolades and pensions for their invaluable contributions to literature.
The awards ceremony, scheduled for December 7, 2023, at 11 am in the Media Hall of the Chief Minister’s office, holds a poignant significance, coinciding with the 92nd birth anniversary of the late literary stalwart, Homen Borgohain. Borgohain, an influential figure in Assamese literature, received prestigious honors like the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Jnanpith Award, leaving an indelible mark on the literary landscape of India.
Jaya Deb, a venerable figure in both Bengali literature and education, has been a steadfast presence at Silchar South Point School for decades. Her profound understanding of English and Bengali literature has garnered nationwide recognition, marked notably by a presidential award during Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma’s tenure as President of India. Her multifaceted expertise and unwavering commitment to literature make her a luminary in both regional and national circles.
Champa Lal Sinha, despite facing financial challenges, has been a relentless force in the development of Bishnupriya Manipuri literature. His notable literary works, including poetry books like “Bukgat Rasakelir Dhun” and “Mi Aalaya Aauri Ghore,” showcase his dedication and commitment to the literary realm. Sinha’s perseverance have earned him respect within the literary community.
The ceremony aims not only to honor these distinguished individuals but also to recognize the ongoing literary prowess within Assam. Among the awardees are luminaries like Sitaram Basumatary from Baksa, a recipient of the Sahitya Academy Award, Bagen Gogoi, an acclaimed author and historian from Dhemaji, Anupama Naiding from Haflong, and Dr. Paritosh Chakkravorty from Goalpara, among others.
“I congratulate the nominees in advance,” shared Minister Ranoj Pegu on social media platforms while announcing the list of litterateurs.
