Cachar Police Arrest Former GP President Among Two In Sonai Drug Bust
In a major crackdown against narcotics, Cachar Police achieved a significant breakthrough in the Sonai area of Cachar district on Saturday (April 25) after recovering a huge quantity of suspected drugs and arresting two persons, including a former Gram Panchayat president.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a special team from Cachar Police under Sonai Police Station launched an early morning raid at Gorrakandi in New Ramnagar. During the operation, police arrested 33-year-old Sabina Yasmin Barbhuiya, former president of New Ramnagar Gram Panchayat.
According to police sources, a search of her residence led to the recovery of 615.99 grams of heroin, allegedly concealed inside 40 soap boxes. Police also seized 290 Nitrazepam tablets, a banned psychotropic substance, when possessed or sold without valid authorisation.
A vehicle bearing registration number AS 11 AB 7330, reportedly a Maruti Suzuki car, was also impounded on suspicion that it had been used for transporting contraband.
During the course of the investigation, police allegedly found links between the seized narcotics and another suspected trafficker, identified as Raju Hussain of the Gumra Jalalpur Tarapur area. Based on the findings, a special police team later arrested him the same day.
Sources further claimed that members of Sabina Yasmin Barbhuiya’s family had allegedly faced narcotics-related accusations earlier as well. Last year, her husband, Abdul Wajid Barbhuiya, was allegedly arrested in connection with transporting and possession of narcotic substances.
Police are now probing whether the seizure is connected to a larger trafficking network operating in the region. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act, and both accused were produced before the court on Saturday.
