“Barak Valley Would Erupt in Flames” If Govt Fails to Act, Warns AAMYA
The All Assam Manipuri Youths’ Association (AAMYA) has appealed to the Government of India to initiate an aerial and ground search operation to locate six abducted civilians, including three women and three children, who were reportedly kidnapped by suspected Kuki insurgents from Jokradhor, Jiribam. The association has urged the government to act within seven days to ensure their safe release.
According to AAMYA, the hostages include Yurembam Rani Devi (60), Telem Thoibi Devi (31), Telem Thajamanbi Devi (8), Laisram Heitombi Devi (25), Laisram Chingkheinganba Singh (2.5), and Laisram Langamba Singh (8 months). The association condemned the abduction as an “inhuman act of terrorism” and warned that rising emotions among the Meiteis of Barak Valley could escalate tensions.
Jiribam, previously known for its peace initiatives, has seen a rise in violent incidents attributed to Kuki insurgents. AAMYA alleged that these activities indicate the involvement of vested interests seeking to fuel conflict. They urged the government to investigate and address these issues promptly.
A recent confrontation on 11 November in Jiribam resulted in the deaths of 10 suspected Kuki insurgents. The association expressed concerns that following such incident, the abductions of the innocent Meitei civilians, could trigger unrest among Meitei residents in the Barak Valley. AAMYA spokespersons warned, “Barak Valley would erupt in flames,” urging swift government intervention to prevent further violence.
The association also criticised the role of Mizoram’s Chief Minister, Lalduhoma, accusing him of promoting a separatist agenda. AAMYA referred to his alleged statements in the US about establishing “Zoland,” a proposed Christian nation. They called this an open threat to India’s sovereignty and demanded the Chief Minister’s immediate removal.
AAMYA appealed to both the central government and Kuki community leaders to cooperate in maintaining peace. They emphasised that targeting innocent civilians was unacceptable and urged all parties to focus on resolving disputes without violence.
In addition, the association has offered its cooperation in ground operations to locate the abductees in suspected hideouts in Barak Valley’s jungles. They called on Meitei families to light candles and pray for the hostages’ safe return.
During a press conference, AAMYA representatives voiced suspicions over Mizoram’s involvement in the prolonged Meitei-Kuki conflict. They questioned the lack of resolution and alleged that external forces might be fuelling the crisis for personal gains.
