
Assam Budget 2025: Major Announcements for Barak Valley
Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, for the fifth time in a row, unveiled the state budget on March 10, bringing a wave of crucial developments for Barak Valley. With a strong focus on infrastructure, healthcare, education, and industrial growth, the Assam Budget 2025 promises substantial allocations to drive progress in the region.
With a total allocation of 2.63 lakh crore rupees, 100 crores were allocated for the Barak Valley Development Department. Among the major announcements for this valley includes flyover in Silchar, Drink from Tap scheme in Sribhumi and Hailakandi, along with a new medical college.
District Wise Key Budget Announcements for Barak Valley:
Cachar
1. Silchar Flyover: Flyover will be constructed in Silchar Municipal Town under Phase 1, with an estimated cost of Rs. 700 crore, improving urban connectivity.
2. New Industrial Park: Silchar is among the locations where the government plans to develop a new industrial park with modern facilities, part of a Rs. 500 crore phased investment.
3. Judicial Infrastructure: A new court building has been completed in Cachar, improving judicial accessibility.
4. Education Expansion: Assam University’s main campus in Silchar will get an Assamese language department.
5. Healthcare Upgrades: Robotic surgery units will be set up at Silchar Medical College to enhance medical facilities.
6. Mini Secretariat: The Mini Secretariat in Barak Valley, Silchar, is expected to be completed within this financial year.
7. Prison Infrastructure: Land has been allocated for constructing a new jail in Silchar, with plans already finalised.
8. Government Press: A branch of Assam Government Press is planned for Silchar, with four new machines already installed.
Sribhumi (Formerly Karimganj)
1. Agriculture College: A new agriculture college will be established in Patharkandi to promote agricultural education.
2. Son Beel Development: A Rs. 100 crore investment under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) will boost the livelihood of over one lakh fishermen, primarily from the Scheduled Caste community.
3. Healthcare Expansion: A new medical college is under construction in Sribhumi, expected to be completed by 2026-27.
4. Police Modernisation: One of four Model Police Reserves in Assam will be developed in Karimganj to enhance law enforcement infrastructure.
5. Water Supply: The “Drink From Tap” project will provide 24×7 clean drinking water in Karimganj, with expansion plans for Lala and Badarpur towns.
Hailakandi
1. Medical College: Hailakandi will get a new medical college as part of the state’s healthcare expansion plan.
2. Water Supply: The “Drink From Tap” initiative will also be implemented in Hailakandi to ensure round-the-clock access to clean drinking water.
