Tragic: Rare Chasma Bandar Dies in Road Accident at Cachar’s Dorgakona
In a tragic incident that highlights the growing threats to wildlife in our region, an endangered Spectacled Monkey, scientifically known as Trachypithecus Phayrei, was killed after being hit by a speeding bike near Dorgakona, close to Irongmara. The monkey, part of a rare and protected species, died just minutes after the accident, sparking concerns.
The incident took place around 11 AM today when a group of five monkeys, locally known as Chasma Bandar, were seen near the roadside at Dorgakona, on the way to Silchar. According to Paraatma Sonar, an auto driver from Irongmara, one of the monkeys was crossing the road when a high-speed bike coming from Irongmara struck it. The impact was so strong that the monkey died within minutes.
Professor Parthankar Choudhury from the Ecology Department of Assam University, Silchar informed that a few years ago, another monkey from the same species lost its life due to electrocution in the same region.
He said, “The area around Assam University is home to several species of monkeys. Some are commonly seen, while others are rare and endangered, like the Spectacled Monkey. These monkeys are also found in some parts of Sribhumi and in the Sepahijola Wildlife Sanctuary in Tripura. The loss of even one such animal is a serious concern.”
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Cachar Division, Palve Vijay Trimbak, IFS, told Barak Bulletin, “As of now, I am unaware of this incident but we will send our rescue team and check. If the incident occurred due to human error or even naturally, we will put up a board, and as far as I know, it’s the first time any incident like this has happened.”
The Spectacled Monkey, also known as the Spectacled Langur or Phayre’s Leaf Monkey, is native to Southeast Asia and found in very limited pockets of South Assam and Tripura. It is listed as endangered due to habitat loss, human interference, and a rapidly decreasing population. Raising awareness about their presence and value is essential to protecting them.
Today’s accident is a painful reminder of the cost of human negligence. Our valley is blessed with rich biodiversity and we must respect every form of life, no matter how different from ours. While driving, it is important to remain alert, follow speed limits, and always watch out for animals, especially near forested or rural areas. Safe driving not only protects human lives but also helps preserve the precious wildlife that shares this land with us.
