NHAI’s Unscientific Work Triggers Landslip on Railway Tracks, Badarpur-Lumding Train Services Suspended

Train services along the vital Lumding–Badarpur hill section in Assam have been suspended with immediate effect following a major landslip near the New Haflong–Jatinga Lampur stretch. The disruption was caused by boulders and a large mass of earth sliding onto the railway tracks, reportedly due to unscientific road repair work by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

According to a press release issued on Monday (June 23) evening, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), ongoing road repairs in the area led to a failure of the slope between the road and rail lines. The slope gave way, pushing debris towards the railway track and allowing water to flow directly over the rails. Railway authorities described the situation as “critical and highly unsafe” for train operations, prompting the immediate suspension of rail traffic between Lumding and Badarpur.

The NHAI’s improper slope management has endangered an essential railway link connecting Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Barak Valley. The Lumding Division has reportedly written to the NHAI demanding immediate corrective action, including deployment of manpower and machinery to stabilise the area and prevent further damage.

Railway teams have already been mobilised to clear the debris. However, the disruption has forced the cancellation, short termination, and rescheduling of several passenger services:
