Cachar Police Arrest Manipur Couple with Heroin Worth Rs. 6.22 Crore
In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the Cachar Police on Saturday evening (July 19) seized a massive consignment of heroin worth approximately Rs. 6.22 crore during a special operation conducted at Saptagram, under Dholai Police Station. A couple from Manipur were arrested in the operation.
Acting on credible intelligence, a police team intercepted a vehicle bearing registration number MN-01AS-1591, which was coming from Churachandpur, Manipur. The vehicle was stopped and searched, leading to the recovery of 99 soap cases containing suspected heroin, cleverly concealed inside specially made chambers of the vehicle.
The two occupants of the vehicle were apprehended on the spot. They have been identified as Michael Lairemruot, son of Lamneikap from Saikot, Churachandpur, and his wife, Merina Neitinphal. Both are residents of Manipur.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Cachar, Numal Mahatta, confirmed the operation and said, “Based on a special operation on Saturday evening, we intercepted a vehicle coming from Mizoram in the Saptagram area under Dholai Police Station. Inside the vehicle, we found 99 soap cases suspected to contain heroin. The Drug Detection Kit test came out positive, and the consignment, weighing around 1.22 kilograms, was seized in the presence of independent witnesses.”
Preliminary investigations suggest that the psychotropic substance was being transported illegally from Churachandpur, Manipur, and Cachar was likely being used as a transit route. The consignment has been sent for further forensic analysis.
Police have registered a case and launched a deeper probe to trace the network involved in the smuggling.
