Family Alleges Congress Leader Backing Land Grab Attempt In Dakshin Krishnapur, Case Filed

Tension has reportedly gripped Dakshin Krishnapur in Sonai after a family alleged that their ancestral land was being forcibly occupied by a group of people allegedly backed by a Congress leader from Sonai. The alleged victim, Afia Khanam Mazumdar, has filed a case at the Silchar Sadar Police Station against four persons in connection with the alleged incident.

According to the complaint, the incident took place on March 3 at around 1:30 PM, when Afia’s husband received a phone call informing him that their ancestral property along the Silchar–Aizawl Road was being grabbed.

Speaking about the incident, Afia’s husband said, “On March 3 at around 1:30 PM, I got a call that my wife’s ancestral property along the Aizawl Road was being grabbed. When we went to the spot, we found 40 to 50 people there, along with my wife’s cousin, Iqbal (Shippu). We couldn’t identify the others, but they were landfilling the plot and were making a house with tin.”

He further alleged that when Afia’s sisters protested, the group claimed they had purchased the land. “When my wife’s sisters tried to object, they said they had bought this land and that we had no rights over it anymore. When my sister-in-law told them that it was their ancestral property and belonged to the sisters, they held her by her hair and threw her to the ground. They took out sharp weapons and threatened to kill them,” he said.

He added that local elders later told them the people involved were allegedly land grabbers. “Our village elders told us that they were land grabbers. We then filed a case at the Sadar Police Station. Later, we got to know that they were being backed by a Congress leader of Sonai and for this reason, we were not getting any result even after the case,” he alleged.

Afia Khanam Mazumdar also claimed that she and her family were assaulted while trying to resist the alleged encroachment. “We were beaten by them when we tried to resist our property being grabbed. One of them was our cousin Ikbal Husain Laskar. They threatened to murder us. So we filed a case, but haven’t got any result so far. They are still building there. It is a property we bought with our hard-earned money. It was bought by my father,” she said.

According to the complaint, the land measures around 30 kathas and belongs to Afia’s family as ancestral property. The accused named in the FIR include Altaf Hussain Laskar, Niyam Uddin Mazumdar, Iqbal Hussain Laskar and Kabir Uddin Laskar.

The allegations have created concern in the Dakshin Krishnapur area, and residents are now waiting to see what action the police take based on the complaint. Police officials have not yet publicly commented on the matter.
