Dry Days Declared Across Cachar From April 7 For Assembly Polls 2026, Strict Ban On Liquor Sale

In view of the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections 2026, the District Magistrate of Cachar has declared “Dry Day” for the entire district, prohibiting the sale, transport, and consumption of alcohol, in line with directives issued by the Excise Department of the Government of Assam.

According to an official notice issued by the Office of the District Commissioner, Cachar on March 31, the restriction will come into force from 5:00 PM on April 7 and remain effective till 5:00 PM on April 9, coinciding with the polling scheduled on April 9. Additionally, May 4, the day of vote counting, has also been declared a dry day, with the ban continuing until the counting process is completed.

During this period, all wholesale liquor establishments, bonded warehouses, IMFL retail ‘OFF’ and ‘ON’ shops, and beer outlets across Cachar district will remain completely closed. The administration has also imposed a strict prohibition on the transportation, possession, sale, purchase, and consumption of alcohol or any intoxicants in public places throughout the district.

The order has been issued under Section 135(C) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and Rule 326(A) of the Assam Excise Rules, 2016. Officials have cautioned that any violation of the restrictions will invite stringent action under the relevant provisions of the Assam Excise Act and other applicable laws.

Appealing to the public, the district administration has urged citizens to cooperate with the authorities to ensure that the electoral process remains free, fair, and peaceful.
