World Water Day Observed On Barak River Bank in Cachar, Focus On Water Quality and Gender

World Water Day 2026 was observed at Singerbond along the banks of the Barak River in Cachar, bringing together government agencies, academic institutions, and civil society groups to raise awareness about water conservation and equitable access.

The programme was organised by the North-East Affected Area Development Society in association with Barak Ecosystem and Water Governance Resource Centre, Mutum Leikai Youth Club, Inter-Agency Group Cachar, and IUCN-India. It marked the second consecutive year of the event being held at the location.

Representatives from the Jiri Range under the Assam Forest Department, Assam University’s Department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Cachar, and other organisations participated in the event.

Speakers highlighted the vital role of the Barak River in sustaining the economy and livelihoods of the region. They expressed concern over the deteriorating water quality of the river, its tributaries, and ox-bow lakes, stressing the urgent need for restoration of the aquatic ecosystem.

Professor Parthankar Choudhury, speaking on the occasion, said, “This year’s theme is ‘Water and Gender’, aimed at highlighting the disproportionate impact of water crises on women and girls. Where water flows, equality grows. If we ensure equitable distribution of water resources, everyone can have access to it.”

The event also featured community engagement activities, including a boat race with participation from eight local teams and a swimming marathon involving children and youth. Research scholars from Assam University demonstrated instant water quality testing procedures to spread awareness.

The programme was attended by Dr. Rajib Gupta and Dr. Ananya Gupta from DDMA Cachar, Debojit Gupta from the Inter-Agency Group, personnel from the NDRF, and other dignitaries. Over 500 people, including local villagers, were present.

Although World Water Day is officially observed on March 22, the event at Singerbond was held later due to higher-than-usual water levels in the Barak River on the designated day.
