Sushmita Dev Confirms TMC Exit, BJP Entry Within Days Says Cachar TMC Chief

Former Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev has confirmed that she has left the Trinamool Congress (TMC), hours after resigning from the Upper House of Parliament. Addressing the media for the first time since her resignation, Dev described the move as a personal decision and declined to reveal her future political plans.

Dev said she would inform the media if she takes any major political decision in the future. However, she stated that she was under no obligation to explain whether she would join another party, which party she might join, or whether she would continue in politics.

When asked about reports linking her to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Dev did not provide a direct answer. She also declined to comment on whether West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had contacted her, saying she would not discuss any conversation regarding “Mamata Didi”.

Explaining her resignation, Dev said it was a “long story” and added that not everything in politics needs to be revealed publicly. She further stated that her upbringing does not allow her to remain in one political party while serving another. However, she did not elaborate further on the remark or specify what prompted her decision to leave the TMC.

Dev also said she would not speak negatively about the Trinamool Congress or any of its leaders and members despite her departure from the party.

Meanwhile, a video showing Dev in a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been circulating on social media. Although no details of the discussion have been made public, the timing of the meeting has fuelled political speculation about her next move.

Adding to the speculation, Cachar district Trinamool Congress president Rajesh Dev claimed during a press conference in Silchar that Sushmita Dev is likely to join the BJP within the next two to three days. He further announced that leaders and workers of the party in Cachar, from the block level to the district leadership, would also leave the TMC and join the BJP.

However, these claims have not been officially confirmed by Sushmita Dev or the BJP.

It should be noted that a former Congress leader, Dev resigned from the Congress following the 2021 Assam Assembly election and later joined the Trinamool Congress. She subsequently became a Rajya Sabha member from West Bengal. Political observers are closely watching the developments, as Dev’s next move could have significant implications for opposition politics in Assam and the Barak Valley region.
