Justice Demand for Sribhumi Minor: Accused Detained, Patrol Post Faces Scrutiny

An eight-year-old girl has allegedly been raped and murdered on Wednesday (July 8) in the Madanmohan area of Sribhumi district, sending shock waves across the locality. The deceased is a resident of the Madanmohan area. The accused, identified as Jakir Alam Talukdar, a resident of Madanmohan, was caught by local residents and handed over to police.

Addressing the media, the victim’s father she was last seen at around 10 am. When she did not return, the family began searching for her and found her body inside a jungle on a hillock near their home at around 12:50 pm. The family then went to report the incident at the local Madanmohan Patrol Post. Her father demanded that the accused be hanged and appealed for justice.

Despite the patrol post being located only 300 metres from the spot, police did not visit the scene after being informed. Angry locals subsequently blocked the Chargola-Hailakandi connecting road in protest during the afternoon, creating a tense situation in the area. A large police force arrived from Sadar following the road blockade. Senior police officers then closed Madanmohan Patrol Post in-charge Mohan Lal Das in connection with the incident. Police eventually persuaded locals to lift the blockade and restore order.

Locals who spoke to the media demanded an encounter against the accused and raised serious concerns about the functioning of Madanmohan Patrol Post. They alleged that staff at the post do not perform their duties after 7 pm, that the post is severely understaffed, and called for the entire staff to be replaced. They also pointed out that it was members of the public who helped catch the accused, not the police.

The police while addressing the media, described the event as an unfortunate incident. In response to the complaints from the public regarding the failure of the police to reach the scene in a timely manner, officials stated that they are taking these allegations seriously and will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

The accused Jakir Alam Talukdar has been taken to Sadar Police Station where questioning is underway. The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the Madanmohan area and Sribhumi district.
