Final Electoral Roll Published for First Ever Silchar Municipal Corporation Election
The Office of the District Commissioner, Cachar, on Wednesday (15 July) published the Final Electoral Roll for the upcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation Election, 2026. The roll was released in accordance with the election programme notified by the Assam State Election Commission.
According to the final electoral roll, 2,70,774 voters are eligible to cast their votes in the election. This includes 1,29,878 male voters, 1,40,885 female voters and 11 voters registered under the third gender category. The final roll covers all 42 wards of the Silchar Municipal Corporation.
Officials said the electoral roll was prepared after examining and disposing of all claims and objections received during the revision period. The process was carried out in line with the guidelines issued by the Assam State Election Commission.
The final electoral roll has been uploaded to the official website of the Cachar District Administration. Residents seeking clarification regarding their electoral details may contact the concerned Registration Officer or the Municipal Election Branch at the Office of the District Commissioner, Cachar, during office hours.
The 2026 election is significant as it will be the first election to the Silchar Municipal Corporation after the town was upgraded from a Municipal Board to a Municipal Corporation. A Municipal Corporation is generally formed for larger urban areas with greater administrative responsibilities and wider civic functions.
Unlike the earlier Municipal Board system, the new civic body will have 42 elected ward councillors. These councillors will elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, who will lead the corporation. The Municipal Corporation will be responsible for overseeing civic services such as roads, drainage, street lighting, sanitation, waste management, public health, parks and urban development, while working with the state government on the city’s long term planning and infrastructure.
The upcoming election is expected to shape the future administration of Silchar’s expanding urban area by choosing representatives who will be responsible for local governance and the delivery of essential civic services over the next term.
