Abhijit Swami to Take Charge as Silchar Medical College Principal

Prof. (Dr.) Abhijit Swami, Professor of Medicine at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), has been given the additional charge of Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of the institution with immediate effect.

The order was issued by the Medical Education and Research Department of the Assam Government through a notification dated August 26.

As per the notification, Prof. (Dr.) Bhaskar Gupta, Professor of Dermatology at SMCH and the incumbent Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent (in-charge), has been relieved of the charge with immediate effect.

Prof. Swami will hold the post until further orders, according to the government notification.

The order was issued in the interest of public service and was e-signed by Dr Siddharth Singh, IAS, Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Assam, Medical Education and Research Department.

The change comes amid an earlier controversy involving Prof. (Dr.) Bhaskar Gupta in connection with the investigation into alleged immoral activities at spas operating from Imperial Mall in Silchar. On July 1, Cachar Police questioned Dr Gupta and his wife for around four hours as part of the probe. Dr Gupta later denied owning or operating the spa and said the premises belonged to his wife, while sharing tenancy documents showing that the agreement with the tenant had been terminated following the police raid.

However, the government notification issued on August 26 does not mention the spa case or provide any reason for relieving Dr Gupta of the additional charge. It only states that the decision was taken “in the interest of public service”. Prof. (Dr.) Abhijit Swami has now been given the charge of Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent (in-charge) until further orders.
