APCC Issues Show-Cause Notice To Silchar Congress President Sajal Acharjee Over Land Sale Row

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has stripped Silchar District Congress President Sajal Acharjee of all his powers and issued him a show-cause notice over an application seeking an NOC for the sale of a 10-katha plot of land in Park Road, Silchar.

The controversy erupted after an application submitted to the Cachar District Commissioner’s office named the Silchar District Congress Committee as the seller, represented by Acharjee, and Joy Kumar Saha, a resident of N.N. Dutta Road, as the proposed buyer.

The application has triggered questions within the party, as the district Congress office, Indira Bhavan, is also located on Park Road. Party members have raised concerns over whether the land mentioned in the application is connected to Congress property and alleged possible irregularities in the transaction.

The boundaries of the plot of land have been described as Rajiv Bhavan to the east, Assam Sahitya Sabha to the west, PWD Road (Park Road) to the north, and Maya Sonar to the south. The Congress office, or Indira Bhavan, also has similar boundaries in Silchar’s Park Road area.

However, the ownership of the plot has not been independently established.

According to an administrative source, the application has already been forwarded to the Land Settlement Department for further processing.

Taking cognisance of the matter, Pradesh Congress President Gaurav Gogoi directed the issuance of a show-cause notice to Acharjee on Tuesday (October 27) night. APCC General Secretary (Administration) Bipul Gogoi asked him to submit a comprehensive and satisfactory written explanation within 24 hours of receiving the notice.

The notice reportedly sought an explanation for the alleged failure to ensure the proper protection and management of district Congress property and asked why disciplinary action should not be initiated against him. It also ordered the immediate withdrawal of all his authority and powers concerning the Silchar District Congress Committee.
