Auto Driver Rescues Woman Attempting Suicide from Sadarghat Bridge in Silchar
In a harrowing incident on Wednesday afternoon, a woman attempted to take her own life by jumping into the Barak River from the Old Sadarghat bridge in Silchar. Thanks to the timely intervention of an alert auto-rickshaw driver, her life was saved.
According to eyewitnesses, the woman had climbed the railing of the bridge when auto driver Amir Uddin Laskar spotted her. “I was on my way to Rongpur with passengers when I saw her. I rushed to stop her and immediately informed her guardians,” Laskar told reporters.
The woman, a resident of the Ghoniwala area in Silchar, later told the media that she was driven to the edge by continuous domestic abuse at the hands of her husband. “He keeps doubting my character and tells me to run away with other men. I can’t take the torture anymore. Even if I go out to bathe, he abuses and beats me,” she said tearfully.
Laskar shared that he stayed with the woman until her family members arrived, but to his shock, they began beating her instead of offering support. “She had told me her pain was because of family torture. I told her that suicide isn’t the answer; there are laws and courts to seek help. But I couldn’t understand why her own family would react like that,” he said.
Local police reached the scene shortly after and rescued the woman.
