Dashami Night Crash Leads to Massive Yaba Haul in Cachar, 78,400 Tablets Recovered

Cachar Police have recovered 78,400 Yaba tablets from a Maruti Ignis car involved in a road accident at Natun Bazar’s Clever House Bypass along National Highway 6, which connects Silchar and Aizawl. One person, identified as Islamul Haque Mazumder, has been arrested in connection with the case on October 21 (Wednesday) night.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Partha Pratim Das said police already had intelligence about the suspected drug consignment. However, the vehicle met with an accident before reaching the police naka checkpoint.

According to the SSP, drug traffickers are changing their methods of transportation and no longer always carry narcotics directly in cars. He said the police are investigating the case in both directions to establish the source of the drugs and their intended destination.

A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police are conducting further investigations to establish the accused’s alleged role and identify possible links to a wider drug trafficking network.

The incident took place on Dashami night when a Maruti Ignis, bearing registration number AS 11Z 7188, allegedly hit a motorcycle carrying a husband and wife before striking a pedestrian. All three sustained serious injuries and were taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

Following the accident, local residents reportedly noticed several people arriving in different vehicles and allegedly attempting to remove items from the damaged car. The incident raised suspicions, and a search of the vehicle led to the recovery of the Yaba tablets packed in eight packets.

One local, Satyajit Das, who witnessed the entire incident, said, “We first saw an Alto car approaching the crashed vehicle, trying to open its door; minutes later, another Scorpio car came and approached the car, and then again an auto driver came searching for the mobile phone of the person who was driving the car involved in the accident. That’s when we were sure of the fact that it was not a normal accident, but the car is involved in some shady business. That’s when we found two bags inside the car; both had wrapped packets of substance, which police later seized and found to be yaba tablets”.

The arrested accused, Islamul Haque Mazumder, is reportedly a resident of Howathang in Dholai. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, the movement of the suspected drug consignment, and the possible involvement of other individuals.

Further details about the source and destination of the drugs, as well as the condition of the injured persons, are awaited.
