Cachar: “Eid Can Happen Without Cow Qurbani”: Udharbond Muslims Take Big Decision
Ahead of Eid-ul-Adha, the Muslim community of Pangram in the Udharbond area of Cachar district has taken a significant and unusual decision aimed at maintaining communal harmony in the region. During a special public meeting attended by local residents and elders, the community unanimously resolved that no Muslim resident of the locality would engage in the buying or selling of cows from now onwards.
Addressing the media after the meeting, a local representative said the gathering was organised to discuss the recurring tensions and difficulties surrounding cattle transportation and cow trade. He stated that many individuals transporting cows often become victims of public assault, harassment and police investigations because cows are worshipped as “Gaumata” by followers of Sanatan Dharma. Keeping these sensitivities in mind, the Muslim community decided to completely distance itself from all forms of cow-related trade.
The speaker further appealed to other Muslim traders outside the locality to also avoid engaging in cow business in order to prevent unnecessary conflict and public humiliation. He said the decision was taken for the protection and dignity of the community and to prevent any further negative perception against Muslims in society. According to him, Eid-ul-Adha can still be observed peacefully without the sacrifice of cows, and religious practices need not become a source of tension among communities.
Apart from refraining from cattle trade, the Muslim community of Pangram also announced that they would stop consuming beef. Members present during the meeting stated that the move was not made under pressure but was instead a voluntary effort to ensure that no religious sentiments of neighbouring communities are hurt. They stressed that respecting each other’s beliefs and traditions is necessary for peaceful coexistence.
