Kalain: Class 8 Girl Harassed on Way to School; Accused in Custody After Outraged Locals Alert Police

A Class 8 schoolgirl was allegedly harassed on her way to school in Cachar’s Kalain area on Saturday (23 May), leading to tension and outrage among local residents. Based on a complaint filed by the girl’s father, police have detained the accused and started questioning him.

According to the complaint, the accused, identified as Ishak Ali from Boraitoli village in Kalain, had allegedly been troubling the minor girl for several days. The family claimed that the student remained silent out of fear and social stigma.

The situation reportedly escalated on Saturday morning when the girl was on her way to school. Allegations state that the accused stopped the student, made inappropriate remarks and allegedly grabbed her hand after finding her alone on the road. The girl somehow managed to escape and reached school, where she later fainted due to fear and distress.

Teachers at the school attended to the student and informed her family after she regained consciousness and narrated the incident while crying. The matter soon spread in the locality, triggering anger among residents.

Following the complaint, Kalain Police launched an investigation and detained the accused from his residence. He is currently being questioned at the police station.

Speaking to the media, a social activist said that the girl’s maternal uncle had informed him about the incident. He claimed that the accused had allegedly been targeting the student for several days and had now physically approached her. The activist also alleged that the girl had received threats of sexual assault.

He further stated that the matter should not be settled through local “Bichaar” meetings, where village elders traditionally discuss disputes. Instead, he said the issue should be dealt with strictly under the law.

Another local resident accompanying him said such incidents could create fear among school-going children if not handled properly. He claimed the student and her mother were both traumatised following the incident.

The matter has also reportedly come to the attention of MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, who has directed authorities to take strict legal action after a proper investigation. Police investigation into the case is currently underway.
