Karimganj MP stands shocked as BJP leaders make mockery of Indian National Anthem; “Tech Snag” says VP
At a time when Assam politics is heated over the alleged singing of Bangladesh’s National Anthem by Congress leaders, a BJP leader has now come under scrutiny for incorrectly singing the Indian National Anthem, causing embarrassment for the ruling party.
The incident took place on Thursday afternoon (October 30) at Ratabari Higher Secondary School in Sribhumi district during a felicitation ceremony organised by the school, where MP Kripanath Mallah was present as the chief guest. In the presence of the MP and hundreds of students and guardians, Nani Gopal Roy from the BJP’s Sribhumi district SC Morcha, reportedly failed to sing the full National Anthem correctly. Nani Gopal Roy also happens to be the former headmaster of the same school.
In a video, Roy was seen skipping a few lines of the anthem and ending it by saying “Jaya” three times instead of four. The mistake left the audience shocked and sparked outrage in the area, especially since it occurred in front of MP Kripanath Mallah, who was attending the programme as the chief guest.
After the event, Roy tried to defend himself by claiming that a “technical glitch” caused parts of the anthem to go unheard, though he later apologised, saying, “If any wrong was done, I am sorry.”
Following the criticism, Roy later released a video on social media where he was seen singing the full Indian National Anthem correctly. This time, he placed special emphasis on the four concluding “Jayas,” unlike during the earlier incident when only three were heard.
The incident comes at a sensitive time when Assam is already witnessing controversy over the alleged singing of Bangladesh’s National Anthem, Amar Sonar Bangla, by Congress leaders during an event in Sribhumi on 27 October. Following that, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed the police to file sedition charges against those involved, stating that the Bangladeshi anthem cannot be sung in Assam.
Meanwhile, an old video from 2014 has resurfaced, showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his campaign in Kolkata, reciting the same line—“Amar Sonar Bangla, Ami Tomay Bhalobashi”—which is now at the centre of the controversy against Congress.
With the latest incident of a BJP leader faltering while singing India’s own national anthem, the debate around national respect has deepened further. What began as criticism over Congress’s “Amar Sonar Bangla” moment has now turned into a larger question—how well do the political leaders themselves honour the country’s anthem?
