Parimal Suklabaidya Seeks Centre’s Intervention to Prevent Closure of KV Assam University, Silchar

Silchar Lok Sabha MP Parimal Suklabaidya met Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi in New Delhi on Tuesday and sought the Centre’s urgent intervention to prevent the possible closure of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Assam University, Silchar.

Suklabaidya submitted a memorandum to Joshi, highlighting the financial difficulties faced by the school, which is currently functioning under Project Mode. According to the memorandum, the school requires around Rs 3 crore annually to operate, an amount Assam University is currently unable to sustain.

The MP urged the Union Education Minister to bring the school under the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), saying this would help secure its future. He also pointed out that the institution already has the required infrastructure and facilities.

The school serves nearly 500 students from Balvatika-III to Class X. It has 14 regular teachers and nine contractual teachers. More than 900 students reportedly apply for admission each year.

Suklabaidya told the minister that the school is particularly important for children from tea garden communities in the region. Students from major tea estates including West Jalinga, Rosekandy, Borjalenga, Derby, Allenpur, Silcoorie, Borakhai, Binodnagar, Kailashpur and Iringmara, as well as smaller tea gardens in nearby areas, depend on the institution for access to quality education.

The MP also highlighted the needs of Assam University employees, stating that the children of around 350 regular teaching staff and 300 regular non-teaching staff depend on the school. Students from nearby rural areas also use the institution.

Joshi, according to the press release, gave a positive hearing to the request and assured Suklabaidya that the Ministry would examine the matter on priority and take appropriate steps in the interest of the students and the institution. The release also said the minister assured that the school would be positively considered for regularisation.

During the meeting, Suklabaidya also raised issues related to educational infrastructure at Assam University. The discussions covered strengthening academic facilities, improving infrastructure and enhancing the quality of higher education on the campus for students, faculty members and people across Barak Valley.

The proposed intervention is aimed at ensuring that the students currently studying at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Assam University, Silchar can continue their education without disruption.
