Relief for Train Passengers: NFR to Restore New Harangajao Line 2 by Sept 5

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is expected to restore Line No. 2 at New Harangajao railway station by September 5, 2026, as restoration work continues at the site affected by settlement and shifting of the railway formation.

Around 500 personnel are working round the clock to speed up the restoration process. NFR has deployed 22 PC excavators, 12 JCBs, 18 tractors and specialised equipment, including pneumatic drills and hydraulic piling rigs, for the work.

The restoration involves strengthening the affected section, stabilising the railway track infrastructure and managing drainage and water accumulation. NFR said passenger safety remains its top priority during the work.

The New Harangajao yard has been facing continuous settlement and lateral shifting of the railway formation since July 20, affecting normal train operations. As a precautionary measure, train movements have been restricted to Line No. 3.

According to NFR, the problem has been linked to changes in the natural watercourse and local drainage pattern, which caused heavy and concentrated water flow from the upstream hillside. The resulting accumulation of water beneath the ground affected the stability of the railway formation.

NFR has undertaken drainage management, dewatering and other stabilisation measures to address the problem and restore the affected lines.

At present, trains are continuing to operate through Line No. 3 under enhanced safety measures. The restoration of Line No. 2 is expected to allow NFR to operate more trains through the section within a short period.

NFR has also stated that Line No. 1 is expected to be restored by the end of September 2026.

The railway said it is deploying the necessary manpower, machinery and other resources to complete the restoration work as early as possible and restore normal train operations through the Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section.
