Selfie Turns Fatal: School Student’s Body Recovered from Barak River in Silchar

In a heartbreaking development, the body of a Class XI student who had gone missing after falling into the Barak River three days ago was recovered on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Ankit Chakraborty, a student of Narsing Higher Secondary School in Silchar.

According to police sources, Ankit had gone to the riverbank in the Itkhola area with a few of his classmates for an outing a few days earlier. While taking a selfie with his friends, he reportedly lost his footing and fell into the river.

Hearing the frantic screams of the classmates, local residents rushed to the spot and launched an immediate search, but the teenager could not be found. Police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) later arrived at the scene and began a search operation in the river.

After three days of continuous search efforts, locals in the Buribail area of Borkhola spotted a body floating in the Barak River on Sunday. On receiving information, police from Bhangarpar Police Station reached the spot and recovered the body.

According to police sources, the recovered body was identified as that of the missing student, Ankit Chakraborty. After completing the necessary legal formalities, the body was sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The tragic incident has cast a pall of gloom over Silchar. Family members of the deceased student have been left devastated, and a sombre atmosphere prevails in the area following his untimely death.
