Violence within the Campus: NIT Silchar likely to notify disciplinary actions against eight students

Eight students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar are set to face disciplinary action after an incident on campus that led to a fourth-semester student’s father lodging a First Information Report (FIR) with the police. According to sources, the incident involved the use of a knife and a hockey stick in an alleged assault on the complainant by the accused students.

Following the incident, NIT Silchar had formed a committee to investigate the matter. Based on the findings of the committee, the authorities have decided to take action against the eight students involved. The registrar of the institution has been informed about the situation, and an order notifying the action is expected to be issued on April 18.

On April 8, 2023, the complainant, a fourth-semester student, had alleged that he was assaulted by 18 students with a knife and a hockey stick on the campus. The incident had led his father lodging an FIR with the police, which had initiated an investigation into the matter.

While the 4th Sem student lodged an FIR, the seniors, who allegedly had beaten him did not come publically with their allegation. One of them spoke with Barak Bulletin on the condition of anonymity and said that the 4th sem student, who is a local boy, often throws tantrums at seniors.

“He is the son of a famous contractor and always gets the backing of the professors in power because of their close ties with the encounter. Even that day, he had come with hockey sticks and knives in his car. Only after he launched an attack on a senior student who comes from a different state, the other students resisted and countered,” said the student.

The incident has sparked concerns about the safety and security of students on the campus. The NIT Silchar authorities have been urged to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and well-being of the students on the campus.
