Cachar Police Seize Narcotics Worth Rs. 8 Crore in River Operation Near Assam-Manipur Border

In a dramatic late-night river operation, Cachar Police, in coordination with the Assam Rifles, intercepted a country-made boat loaded with narcotic substances and contraband items worth around Rs. 8 crore along the Assam-Manipur border on Friday.

According to official sources, acting on a reliable intelligence input in the early hours of 11 October, the joint team launched a riverrine operation under the jurisdiction of Lakhipur Police Station. The operation was carried out in the Barak River, near the remote Jakuradhar area bordering Manipur.

During the search, conducted in the presence of independent witnesses, the team recovered 10,000 Yaba tablets and 1,25,000 packets of Esse Light cigarettes concealed inside the intercepted boat. Preliminary investigation revealed that the narcotics were being smuggled from Churachandpur in Manipur into Assam.

Officials estimate the black-market value of the seized items to be approximately Rs. 8 crore. The police have initiated further investigation to trace the network behind the illegal transportation and identify those involved.

Speaking about the operation, Superintendent of Police (SSP) Numal Mahatta said, “Following the order of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, our war against drugs continues. As is evident through our work across various locations, we are determined to keep our mission going. We will continue our efforts until our region is completely free from this social menace.”

Cachar Police have been conducting regular anti-narcotics operations in coordination with other law enforcement agencies, and this latest success adds to their growing list of major seizures in the district.
