14 Congress Leaders Suspended for Six Years Over Alleged Anti-Party Activities

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has suspended 14 party leaders and workers from the Silchar and Sonai areas for six years over alleged involvement in anti-party activities during the 2026 Assam Assembly election.

The suspension order was issued on 18 August 2026 on the direction of APCC president Gaurav Gogoi. It was signed by APCC General Secretary (Organisation) Ramanna Baruah.

The order states that the 14 individuals have been suspended from the Congress party with immediate effect for their alleged involvement in anti-party activities during the Assembly election. The suspension will remain in force for six years.

Those suspended include Silchar District Congress Committee vice-presidents Samsur Rahman Choudhury (John), Aktar Hussain Barbhuiya and Mojibur Rahman Choudhury.

The list also includes DCC Silchar general secretaries Ajmol Hussain Laskar, Shaine Ahmed Laskar, Mehboob Hussain (Ripon), Hanif Alam Mazumder, Altaf Hussain Laskar (Titu) and Najib Ahmed Laskar.

Other suspended leaders are Assam Youth Congress Committee general secretary Ijaj Laskar, Minority Department general secretary Jahur Choudhury, BCC Sonai general secretary Kadir Ahmed Laskar, former district Minority Department president Ansar Hussain Barlaskar and Youth Congress president of the Sonai constituency Rakib Ahmed Mazumder.

The APCC order does not provide further details about the specific activities or incidents that led to the disciplinary action.

The move comes ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly election and is likely to have political implications for the Congress organisation in Silchar and Sonai.
