Landslides in all three districts of Barak Valley; death toll rises to 20, several injured
It is chaos and carnage in Barak Valley. Several landslides occurred in different parts of the Valley claiming as many as 20 lives so far. Rescue operations are going on and the administration fear that the death toll could further rise.
In Cachar’s Joypur area in Kanakpur part III, a massive chunk of land slipped on a residence. Seven dead bodies have been recovered so far and one is still missing. Two got critically injured and have been rushed to the hospital. In Harinagar GP, another such landslip injured one individual.
The seven dead in Cachar have been identified as, Aajim Uddin Laskar (45), Aliya Begum (20), Alom Uddin (18), Arif Uddin (17), Amina Begum (14), Sumana Begum (12) and Rahim Uddin (8).
In Hailakandi’s Mohanpur area, a major landslip took down three houses. According to the local MLA, Nizam Uddin a similar incident took place in Chandighat Tea Estate too. “It is a catastrophe and I plead to the chief minister to ensure that the state takes care of the family members of the deceased,” said MLA Nizam Uddin.
Hailakandi DC, Megha Nidhi Dahal informed Barak Bulletin that seven are feared to be dead and the rescue operation is still going on. Dahal informed that five persons got injured and have been sent to the hospital.
The catastrophe killed six in Karimganj’s Rahimpur area under Kaliganj Police outpost. The F&ESS got a call around 8:14 AM in the morning about a landslip and the officials were sent to the spot immediately.
Describing the incident, R.T Commander, Karimganj F&ESS reported, “Due to landslide at hillside total six persons (one family and one other) died by getting trapped under land.” The commander informed that “All bodies have been recovered by public by using Excavator.”
Aziz Uddin (57), Rezia Begam (40) Aftab Hussain (10), Amir Hussain (7), Tahera Begum (5), Joynal Biwi (14) lost their life by getting suffocated under the slid land.
The commander informed that 10 individuals got injured, one cow lost her life, one bike got trapped and two houses got damaged.
