Best batsman of last year’s Super Division, Raju Das found form in today’s match of Narayan Paul Memorial Tournament organised by Silchar DSA. On the back of Raju Das’ unbeaten 84 runs, defending champions United Club secured their second consecutive win.
Players have now adjusted to the conditions, the matches of Super Division have now become more intense. After winning the toss on Wednesday, United Club decided to put Yogayog Sangha to bat. Promoted after winning the first division, Yogayog started the innings well. Openers Roshan Topno (19) and Niloy Roy Choudhury (31) had put on a 55-run partnership. But after the fall of the first wicket, Yogayog started crumbling. At one stage, 150 looked far-fetched, but then came the innings of Samir Sinha.
The lower middle-order batsman scored 69 runs to take United to a respectable score of 185 runs. He went on to stitch a 49-run partnership with Ankit Agarwal for the eighth wicket where Agarwal’s contribution was 3.
For United, Fazlur Rahman, Sukanta Dey, and Nirjhar Das picked two wickets each.
United cruised through the run chase in just 34.5 overs. Opener Raju Das was handed over a chance by the Yogayog fielders and he latched on it. During the unbeaten 84, he played some sensational strokes that the spectators are used to seeing from the bat of Raju Das. Pradeep Sarkar (28) also played well. But it was the partnership between Das and Prasenjit Sarkar, (71 not-out) that took the match away from Yogayog.
The spinners of the promoted team kept United under pressure but by dropping catches at crucial junctures, Yogayog failed to capitalise on that. Samir Sinha followed up his good batting with an amazing spell of 2-28. But his allround performance was not enough to upset the defending champions.
