Earthquake of 6.4 magnitude jolts Barak Valley and entire Northeast; Epicenter 43km West of Tezpur
National Center for Seismology, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India has reviewed the earthquake that jolted the whole of the Northeast.
According to the details made available on the website, the earthquake of 6.4 magnitude had epicenter 43km west of Tezpur, Assam, India. “The Earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter Scale had first hit Sonitpur, Assam today at 7:51 AM,” informed National Center for Seismology. The tremors were felt in all parts of the Assam and Northeastern region.
According to the scientific readings, an earthquake between 6.00 to 6.09 on the Richter scale is considered as “strong” which can cause moderate damage in populated areas.
A Beltola resident in Guwahati said that this was the strongest earthquake she felt in her lifetime. She stays in a multistorey apartment and the tremors woke them up.
Reports of damage to property are coming from all parts of upper Assam, however, these are initials wire dope. Detailed report awaited.
