On-duty Policemen in uniform attacked in Karimganj, accused held over sexual harassment case

Men in uniform on-duty have been attacked by an alleged sex offender in Karimganj’s Nilambazar area. This incident happened on November 9, when the second officer-in-charge of Nilambazar Police Station went for investigating a sexual harassment case. The investigating officer and another police jawan were attacked by the suspect in this case. Later a bigger police formation led by the OC of Nilambazar Thana went to recover the two injured policemen and arrested their attacker named Gautam Suklabaidya at the same time. The injured officers were later sent to the hospital.

This incident has happened last night when the second OC of Nilambazar Police Station, Pradip Singha went to investigate a sexual harassment case in Nilambazar’s Brahmanshashan Shibbari area. According to OC Singha, “Today (Number 9) a woman had come to register an FIR and accordingly OC Sir has assigned me the case and I started the investigation. When we went to the house of the prime suspect, in this case, he showed us a heated temper and started to misbehave with me. He shoved us outside his home and didn’t answer any of our questions”.

The injured officer further said, “We tried to follow the procedure of the investigation and when we asked him questions regarding the case, he became aggressive and started to attack us. He tore off the shoulder (where the officer had his star and insignia) and injured my arm. He also did the same with another of our jawan from the battalion who was there with me”. The injured batallion jawan, Gautam Mahanta and the second OC were later sent to the hospital for a check-up.

According to police sources, he went to a woman’s home in the same village and sexually harassed a minor there. After a case was registered, the police were investigating this case. Later when the information about the attack reached the police station, OC Dipjyoti Malakar lead a huge police formation to recover the two police personnel and also arrest the suspect, Gautam Suklabaidya the sexual harassment case, who attacked two on-duty police officers in uniform.
