As per the pre scheduled occassion, 1179 cadres of two militant organisations Bru Revolutionary Army (BRAU) and United Democratic Liberation Front of Barak Valley (UDLF-BV) laid down 335 firearms and 382 ammunitions infront of Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika and Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary at a ceremony held in Katlicherra today. With their surrender, these cadres will be absorbed in mainstream leaving their militant past behind. The government will start developmental works in militancy ridden remote areas of Barak Valley inhabited by Bru tribes from now on.
Speaking to reporters on the occassion, Pijush Hazarika said, “These 1100 cadres of UDLF and BRAU came forward in favour of peace and I thank them. The arms surrender by them will bring permanent peace for Barak Valley and harbinger a new era of development. Our CM’s dream is to make Assam one of the five most developed states in India. To develop Assam, only Guwahati or Dibrugarh getting developed won’t work. Every village and street of Barak Valley has to be developed too. For development, permanent peace is required. UDLF and BRAU cadres came forward for that and I’m thankful to them.”
Commenting on the arms surrender Biswajit Daimary said, “Now the step forward is to work. The govt. has taken various steps and issued funds at the state and central level for speedy development of Assam. We know that Brus live in remote area. And when an armed struggle is happening our officers, representatives and common people can’t go there and it is an obstacle to development. Today with the arms surrender, our officers will visit remote areas inhabited by Brus and perform departmental works there seeing the face of development.”
On the issue of fulfilling their demands, Daimary said, “We have prepared the Council system for them. And via this Council their areas and villages will receive monetary funding for special development. Rest assured, the govt. will speedily implement all of it’s schemes in their areas. Now with the advent of peace, their demands for roads, hospitals, bridges, schools will get fulfilled.”
