The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Cachar Branch and the Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA) SMCH convened an urgent meeting at the Alumni Hall of SMCH on the evening of September 16 regarding the alleged assault of an on duty doctor of SMCH that took place on September 11. This meeting was convened in light of allegations that a government official had assaulted the doctor leading to dismay among the local medical fraternity.
The government official in question is Bonrai Rongmei, a Drug Inspector of Cachar district. He is alleged to have assaulted a junior doctor at SMCH by abusing his position as a bureaucrat while reportedly being inebriated. As per IMA’s statement, medical examination confirmed the veracity of Rongmei’s alcohol intoxication. The said assault took place during non-visiting hours within the premises of SMCH, an institution dedicated to healthcare and healing. However, the IMA also disclosed that it was not a one off incident by Rongmei, as they have received information suggesting similar misbehavior by him within SMCH in 2021.
In light of these deeply concerning developments, IMA Cachar and JDA SMCH jointly voiced for the immediate withdrawal of suspension order against Dr. A. Dey, the doctor who fell victim to the alleged assault. Moreover, they demanded stringent security measures to be put in place for ensuring the safety and well-being of Dr. A. Dey and other healthcare professionals at SMCH who have reportedly been subjected to death threats in the aftermath of the incident.
Both the organisations warned that they would be compelled to launch a state-wide mass agitation with the entire medical fraternity if stern action is not taken against Bonrai Rongmei.
