ABVP and TMC Workers Clash in Silchar Over RG Kar Doctor’s Murder Case
Silchar witnessed some heated moments on 17 August, as a peaceful protest by ABVP escalated into a confrontation with Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers. The situation became heated outside the TMC office, necessitating a heavy police presence to maintain order.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had organised a protest in Silchar against the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, which has sparked widespread outrage. ABVP members planned to burn an effigy of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as part of their demonstration.
However, the situation took a turn when TMC workers, having learned about the protest, emerged from their office to block the ABVP’s efforts. The confrontation led to loud sloganeering from both sides, further escalating tensions.
As the ABVP members attempted to set fire to the effigy, police intervened to prevent the situation from spiralling out of control. This intervention led to a brief scuffle between the police and ABVP members, who accused the police of bias.
An ABVP representative told the media that their protest was aimed at highlighting what they see as the West Bengal government’s failure to protect women. He criticised the police for preventing the protest, especially when women participants were allegedly manhandled.
On the other hand, a TMC representative acknowledged the gravity of the incident in Kolkata but condemned the ABVP’s actions, calling it political exploitation of a tragic event. He emphasised that TMC also seeks justice but believes such protests disrespect the victim.
The TMC representative also questioned the ABVP’s selective activism, pointing out their silence during similar incidents, including the protests by the national athletes and an incident at Assam University. He also pointed out their silence over Manipur violence.
As per reports, the situation was brought under control, with a heavy police presence outside the TMC office. No major injuries have been reported, but the city is on high alert. Authorities have urged both sides to exercise restraint and avoid further provocation, hoping to prevent any further escalation.
