Breaking Of Chimney of Brick Kiln Kills 3 Labourers And A 12-Year-Old, Injured Over 10 Labourers, Death Toll Likely To Increase
Breaking of chimney of a brick kiln (ith batta in Bengali) has taken the life of four individuals including a child. Over 20 people have been injured in this unfortunate incident. This incident happened today evening in a brick factory named S. A. B. I in the Kalain area of Cachar. The patients have been rushed to Kalain CHC and patients with severe conditions have been referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
This evening while the farmers were setting the coal on fire in the kiln, its chimney suddenly crumbled and collapsed. Two people died on the spot, which includes a 12-year-old boy. Since the last report, over 10 labourers are said to be injured in this incident. Another two labourers died while undergoing treatment at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. This accident is said to be because of a manufacturing fault in the kiln. It is alleged that the brick kiln was too old for performing daily operations and the owner didn’t pay any heed to the weak condition of the chimney. Despite knowing the fragile condition of the chimney, the owner kept it functional risking the labourers of the kiln.
According to a labourer working there, when the accident happened in the evening, the fire brigade was called from Kalain. The fire brigade rushed to the spot, but the labourer alleged that the water was exhausted within 5 minutes as the machine pumping water stopped working. The two individuals who died on the spot are Abu Sufian and Rahat Arfan who was just 12 years old. Two individuals who were labourers at the factory also died at SMCH, they are Chunilal Paswan and Medini Paswan. They are father and son in relation.
Some of the injured have been rushed to the Kalain Health Centre, while some with severe burns and injuries have been referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital. Some labourers are suspected to be trapped inside the rubles of the broken kiln. The recovery is in the final stage as per the last reports, there are labourers who are yet to reach the hospital. The number of deceased might increase as many of the injured are fighting for their lives at the hospital.
