Administration carries out eviction drive in Annapurnaghat's New Colony and Bhagadahar

The Cachar district administration today carried out a massive eviction drive on government land in Annapurnaghat’s New Colony and Bhagadahar. More than 150 houses in Annapurnaghat and over 22 houses in Bhagadahar were bulldozed by the authorities, leaving the residents stranded and homeless.

The eviction operation was launched by the CRPF and police in the morning at Bhagadahar and New Colony of Annapurnaghat. JCBs were used to bulldoze several houses one after another, leaving many buildings in ruins. The administration claimed that the eviction was necessary to conduct erosion work of Barak River.

However, the residents of the area alleged that they did not receive any prior notice from the administration before the eviction was carried out. They have been living on government land for many years and are now wondering where they will go.

The eviction has sparked massive outrage among the residents, who have demanded justice for themselves. Some have even gone as far as asking the government to shoot them instead of evicting them from their homes.

Speaking to reporters a resident whose house got demolished said, “We have been living in the khas land for more than 150 years. Now suddenly they are evicting us from our houses. Where will we go with our children? They didn’t inform us before bulldozing our houses. We are voting for this government hence we urge them to provide land for us.”
