Another landslide in Silchar - Shillong road disrupts vehicular traffic; "Debris cleared," EJ Hills Police

Unfortunate news broke today morning, another landslide in Silchar – Shillong road near Sonapur in East Jaintia Hills disrupted the vehicular traffic. As per the available information, the landslide occurred at the edge of the tunnel in Sonapur and so, the vehicular traffic got disrupted.

The East Jaintia Hills administration informed that excavators and bulldozers were deployed to clear the road in war footing. This was the second disruption in the last 24 hours.

During the day, a landslide was reported on NH06 at Pyrtakuna that occurred early Monday morning and was cleared in the evening. “Traffic is now moving both ways. All drivers are caution to drive carefully and obey traffic rules at all times,” East Jaintia Hills Police informed at around 7:00 pm.

Then came an update at 5:00 am from the East Jaintia Hills Police. “There has been another Landslide on NH06 near the SONAPUR TUNNEL in the wee hours of d day. THE ROAD NEAR THE TUNNEL HAS BEEN COMPLETELY BLOCK. Efforts are on to clear the same,” stated the Police..

What comes as a sign of relief, the road that was blocked near the Sonapur Tunnel on NH06 because of Landslide that occurred this morning has been, “Cleared and open for vehicular traffic,” asserted the East Jaintia Hills Police.

It is worth mentioning here that the train connection between Silchar and Lumding stays disconnected as the flash floods washed away significant portion of the track. Though the NF Railway is putting its best foot forward, there is no clarity by when the Railway service will resume. In such a scenario, a lot of Hajj Pilgrims are depending on the Shillong Road. Many of them got stuck due to the landslide.
