Assam University student Sangbritee Purkayastha dies after falling off from motorcycle

In a shocking turn of affairs, a young student has lost her life. Mass Communication third semester student of Assam University Silchar, Sangbritee Purkayastha was on her way to her home in National Highway Road, Silchar when she became a victim of a road mishap.

As per available information, after attending an event in Ellora Hotel, she was returning home with a friend on a motorcycle. As the bike reached near Deshabandhu Road (right next to BTN’s office), from the rear seat, she complained that her saree is getting pulled. Her friend who was riding the motorcycle asked her to hold on for a moment and he will park the two-wheeler. As per eyewitnesses, before he could park, she got pulled by the saree stuck to the tyre and fell on the road on her head.

The impact of the injury resulted in mild bleeding. The accident took place at around 7:30 pm and she was immediately rushed to South City nursing home. As per eyewitnesses, she had lost her consciousness on the way. “When we reached South City Hospital, the treating doctors told us that they can’t feel the pulse and we must immediately rush to Silchar Medical College and Hospital. There the doctors declared her brought dead,” informed her friend who had accompanied them to the Hospital.

General secretary of Assam University’s Students’ Union, Aritra Dhar also rushed to the Hospital. “She was one of my support systems. The moment I saw her lying on the bed, senseless, I lost my balance. During my toughest period of time, she stood by me like a sister. Almost every day she used to call me to take stock of my situation. Sometimes I would call. She is close to almost all of her batchmates,” shared Dhar.

He added, “Though she was my junior she stood by me like a sibling every time. It is my personal loss. I am still in shock. Don’t know how many days it will take to come out of this trauma. I lost my family member today.”

Sangbritee Purkayastha’s parents are in shock. They have requested for some personal space to mourn in peace.

Police has taken over the proceedings and the body has been sent for autopsy.
