Assam University to Accept Students Without CUET-UG Scores: AUSU Calls it a Win

On May 22, Assam University Students’ Union President through a social media post has announced that the CUET-UG exams will no longer be mandatory for admission to Assam University’s undergraduate (UG) courses. 80% of the seats in Assam University and its affiliated colleges will be filled without CUET-UG scorecards, while 20% will be reserved for those with valid CUET-UG scores. This significant change is aimed at easing the admission process for students across the region.

Students across the Barak Valley who wish to pursue their higher education in Central universities recently appeared for this year’s CUET examination. However, many faced several issues, such as distant exam centres, which led to a demand for allowing admissions without the CUET-UG.

The Assam University Students’ Union (AUSU) played a crucial role in addressing this issue. The union extended its gratitude to key figures, including CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Hon’ble Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Shri Kaushik Rai, Shri Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha Dada, ABVP, media and the people of Barak Valley for their support in this endeavour.

AUSU President Subham Roy stated, “We were the only ones who heard the cry of the students and demanded for this change.” As a result of their efforts, Assam University will now admit students to UG courses without requiring CUET-UG scores.

However, it is important to note that this decision applies only to UG courses. Admission to postgraduate (PG) courses, such as M.A., M.Sc., and M.Com., will still require CUET-PG scores.

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is a standardised exam used for admission to various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Central universities across India. Following its inception on 2021, the students who hope to get admission in Central Universities are required to appear for this exam. However, this new development will allow students to take admission in Assam University even without CUET-UG Scores.
