Big Impact: SP Cachar suspends SI for lapses as accused commits suicide while in custody
A prisoner accused of domestic violence was locked up at the Bihara Police Outpost of Cachar district. He was supposed to be produced at the court in the afternoon of February 6. One same morning, he requested the Police officials to allow him to use the washroom as he wanted to defecate. The Police officials asked him to take a dump in the open by the nearby pond. A few moments later, the locals saw his dead body hanging with the branch of a tree at a stone’s throw distance away from the outpost.
Jomir Uddin a resident of the Cachar district was arrested by Police. Uddin had allegedly attacked his wife with a dao a few days back. Since his wedding around eight months ago, he has had a troubled marriage. According to the neighbours, the couple engaged in frequent fights that forced the neighbours to intervene and broker peace.
His family members, on the other hand, alleged that the Police have killed the accused and framed it to be a case of suicide. After Barak Bulletin published the report on the escape from the Outpost and the subsequent suicide, the department initiated an action.
Speaking with the publication, SP of Cachar District, Numal Mahatta said, “Since the accused was in custody and somehow managed to escape, it is certain that there were lapses. A departmental probe has been initiated to decode the chain of events that led to the unfortunate incident of an inmate commiting suicide outside the outpost.”
SP Mahatta also added, “As the departmental proceedings continue, we have suspended S I Subarna Das.
