Big push to rooftop solar power generation: NIT Silchar ready with 1MW plant

Come January 26 and the National Institute of Technology Silchar will formally announce the completion of the 1mW solar rooftop power plant connecting the sprawling campus.
Prof Sibaji Bandopadhyay, director NIT Silchar informed that the whole institute is anxiously waiting for this moment when the transformation of power source shall add a fresh fillip to the mission of the Central Government towards using and encouraging green energy.
“the project to produce 1MW of solar power is linked to the existing grid of the institute and once this becomes operational, the whole institute including the Kendriya Vidyalay shall be benefitted by the cost effective initiative for the next 25 years. Power supply slabs have been alloted for specific departments and hostels and we are all looking forward to the commencement of the power purchase policy, terms of which were initiated began a year ago,” the director mentioned.
Most of the multi storied buildings including the newly constructed administrative block have solar plants installed and grid connected.
Sources at NIT informed that while the average monthly electricity consumption of the institute is 366000/kWh at per unit price of Rs 6.80/kWp, the institute is paying Rs 29 lakh to APDCL per month now. Once the plant starts operating, the average monthly electricity production would be 102500/kWh for which we shall have to pay Rs 2.42/kWp per unit price.
